The Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) are currently operating in tandem. Amid all the drama and the entertainment that has been taking place across the two leagues nonstop, PCB chairman and Pakistan’s interior minister Mohsin Naqvi, as always, raised a few eyebrows by issuing a bizarre “best league” remark, leaving several fans and commentators bemused to say the least.
According to the PCB chairman, the PSL is set to overtake the IPL as the world’s best-performing franchise T20 tournament. His “best league” remark comes amid the ongoing 11th edition of the PSL, which is currently operating behind closed doors due to the regional tension triggered by the US-Iran war in the Middle East, a highly volatile region that shares close proximity with Pakistan.
In a meeting with his board of governors, Naqvi pointed out that the PSL has seen a sharp surge in investor interest in recent times. This is believed to be the major reason behind Naqvi’s “best league” claim assertion.
“The PSL has now become the best market for investment. The time is not far when the PSL will become the world’s number one league.”
Mohsin Naqvi
Quick Stats Comparison: IPL vs PSL
| Metrics | IPL | PSL |
| League Rank (WCA) | 3 | 5 |
| Year Established | 2008 | 2016 |
| Total Teams | 10 | 8 |
| Estimated Annual Revenue (USD) | $1 billion | $60 million |
| Media Rights Valuation (USD) | $6 billion | $93 million |
Naqvi’s optimism stems from the fact that the PSL has indeed seen a positive uptick in its growth and influence in recent years. Some major developments include the participation of two news franchises (Hyderabad & Rawalpindi) this session, coupled with a steady influx of prominent international players like Steve Smith, Adam Zampa, and Marnus Labuschagne. In addition, the league has seen a growing interest in participation from several other popular names from the broadcasting industry, including Nick Knight and Mark Nicholas, who are currently contributing to the game from behind the microphone.
But despite all the positive growth in recent times, the reality couldn’t be further from the “best league” claim. Just by looking at the monetary figures alone, the disparity between the IPL and the PSL becomes quite evident. With an estimated revenue of $60 million, PSL stands nowhere close to the IPL, whose annual revenue stands at a staggering high of $1 billion. Besides, the difference gets more apparent when we look at the media rights valuation of the two T20 leagues. IPL’s media rights are valued at around $6 billion, whereas for the PSL, that number drops significantly to approximately $93 million for the PSL. Of course, the legacy was not achieved by IPL overnight. But since its inception way back in 2008, the IPL has continued to stamp its authority, challenging the dominance of several other cash-rich leagues across the globe, including the PSL.
Naqvi’s Long-Standing Tradition Beef With India

Naqvi’s latest jibe at the BCCI is nothing new. Being a politician and a cricket administrator for Pakistan at the same time, Naqvi has repeatedly engaged in feuds with the BCCI. However, his attempts to challenge BCCI’s dominance have been met with consistent failures, starting with the Champions Trophy 2025 debacle, which was meant to be hosted entirely by Pakistan. Later that same year, tensions between India and Pakistan escalated further in the Asia Cup due to the “no-handshake” standoff, orchestrated by India over the inhumane Pahalgham terror attacks. Further controversy later unfolded on the eve of the Asia Cup final when Naqvi reportedly ran away with the trophy, which added more fuel to the fire.
It’s safe to assume that the PCB chairman is on a mission to give the IPL and the BCCI a tough fight, both diplomatically and on the field of play. But for him to accomplish such an unlikely objective, the PSL will have to attract some quality overseas players with some very lucrative cash incentives, something the IPL has been so good at in recent years. Furthermore, the PSL and the PCB should work closely to consistently unearth local, homegrown talent, which can further enhance the league’s reputation on the global stage.
