India, the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav stumbles upon yet another historic milestone in world cricket. On Sunday, amidst a sea of blue at the Narendra Modi Stadium, India go on to lift the T20 World Cup title for a record third time. The ghosts of the 2023 World Cup final heartbreak have finally been overcome. At last, the notion of defeating history, creating history, and repeating history turns out to be true. India become the first team to win a T20 World Cup title at home. In the process, they also become the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title.
It was always going to be an uphill challenge for the inexperienced Kiwi bowling attack. It was a test in which they faltered big time, especially when their bowlers failed to contain the onslaught from the Indian top order early doors. The New Zealand bowlers failed to learn from their mistakes from the recent India vs New Zealand T20I series prior to the T20 World Cup and played straight into the hands of the Indian batters. As fate would have it, none of the bowlers apart from Mitch Santner were spared as India racked up a record 255. The Blackcaps couldn’t really recover from the carnage from the Indian batters and left themselves with far too much to chase, ultimately resulting in a disappointing 96-run hammering.

What Worked Right For India in T20 World Cup Final

Sanju Samson Once Again Comes Good
Sanju Samson’ late addition following India’ disastrous outing against South Africa in Super 8 has simply turned India’s fortunes around towards the back end of the tournament. Fresh from his earlier two knocks of 97* and 89 against the Windies and England respectively, Samson produced another stellar knock of 89 to steer India to a mammoth total.
The strike rate at which he scored those runs has been a true game changer for India. His knock made the key difference as India had the perfect launchpad to accelerate and post a record target which ultimately turned out to be way beyond New Zealand’s reach.
Shivam Dube’s Late Fireworks With The Bat
Jimmy Neesham’s triple-wicket blow inside the 16th over significantly hindered India’ late push to a massive score. At one stage, India seemed poised even for a 300 plus finish. But Neesham held India back every so slightly by removing Kishan, Suryakumar, and Samson all inside the space of an over.
India struggled all the way till the 19th before Dube found the much needed spark to lift India past the 250-run mark. He went after New Zealand’s best bowler Neesham, and plundered him for 21 off the final over to help India restore lost momentum and get past 250, which proved far too much for the Blackcaps in the final.
Wise Decision to Bring Axar Patel Early
Contrary to what the end scoreline might suggest, New Zealand did get themselves off to a good start, smashing 25 in the first two overs alone. The stage was set for Allen and Seifert to go big. The Kiwi duo scored freely against the pacers and quickly raced out of the blocks to give NZ a positive start inside the powerplay. But SKY pulled out a trick up its sleeve by introducing spin as early as the third over. It turned out to be a masterstroke.
New Zealand were not mentally prepared to tackle the spin threat from the Indian spinners. Allen, who could have been a real threat for India previously, had his struggles against spin in this tournament. The indian skipper was certainly wary of that and his move to bring Axar early paid dividends for India. Allen holed out to long on, allowing Axar to draw first blood. New Zealand could never really get going after the early setback and kept losing wickets regularly. Allen’s wicket early on in the run chase proved to be a very pivotal moment as it killed the back of the run chase almost instantly and paved the way for a comfortable win for India in the 2026 T20 World Cup Final.
Bumrah Piles Up The Misery For New Zealand
Jasprit Bumrah is starting to give us the impression that he does not belong to this planet. The ace speedster seems to be having some god-like attributes and some very good fortune on his side, which certainly sets him apart from any ordinary pacer. Bumrah rarely misses his mark in the clutch games and on the eve of the T20 World Cup final, he proved just how valuable he is to the team’s success.
In a 250-plus run chase, Bumrah’s economy rate stood at an astonishing 3.75 RPO as he returned unbelievable figures of 4-15. Bumrah struck at the vital points of the game, not allowing NZ to garner any sort of early momentum. He devastated the NZ top order by picking up 2 early wickets, preventing the Blackcaps from getting a head start. He later returned in the death to complete the demolition job for India. Bumrah claimed 2 back to back wickets towards the end. Naturally, the NZ batgers had no answer to his sheer brilliance with the ball as they failed to counter his unmatched domination with the ball. He finished his 2026 T20 World Cup campaign as the jont-highest wicket-taker along with Varun Chakravarthy.
Where Did New Zealand Lose The Plot In The Final?

Wrong Call At The Coin Toss
Mitch Santner missed a trick by not opting to bat first. The surface was a belter in the first innings and the in-form Kiwi openers certainly had the opportunity to make the most of the favourable batting conditions. India’s struggles in the T20 World Cup had only come while chasing. New Zealand think tank should have been mindful of this fact. It was an area of vulnerability that was definitely overlooked by the New Zealand captain at the toss.
Moreover, New Zealand would have been better off setting a total. In a big final, runs on the board would have been the ideal way to go about proceedings. But instead, Santner & Co. gave India a free hand, and with the form of their life that they are in, the home side was not going to let this historic golden opportunity slip away from their grasp.
Tactical Blunders Aplenty
New Zealand’s tactics on the field seemed to be bizarre right from the get-go. Since the toss, New Zealand never seemed to be in the game. Despite India’s glaring problem against off-spin, Santner dropped Cole McConchie for Jacob Duffy, who leaked an enormous 35 runs in his 2 overs. McConchie had a brilliant outing in his last game and could have certainly had an impact if he had been given a go in this game.
Another tactical error made by Santner on the field was to not allow Phillips to bowl another over of spin. New Zealand did start off with spin. Abhishek Sharma didn’t look at his fluent best as he could only score 5 off the first over. Santner did not persist with Phillips again and leaned towards pace far too early which led to their disappointing demise. The Indian openers naturally liked pace on the ball and feasted on some very poor, erratic bowling from the likes of Duffy, Ferguson, and Henry, all of whom went at more than 10 RPO.
Daryl Mitchell Held Back Despite His Stellar Record vs India
As we draw curtains on India’s epic T20 World Cup Final victory, one tactical error that can’t be fathomed from a NZ supporter’s perspective is New Zealand’s decision to hold Mitchell back. Daryl Mitchell is a clean-striker of the cricket ball and is someone who can clear the ropes with ease. He maintains a formidable strike rate of close to 150 and he should have been sent ahead of Ravindra and Chapman, when New Zealand were rocked early.
In addition, Mitchell has got the wood on India in recent times. He has scored consistently against India in the ODI format and also played a crucial role in driving the Blackcaps to a historic ODI series win on Indian soil. He certainly knows a thing or two about challenging India’s domination. But New Zealand got it all wrong by sending Ravindra and Champan ahead of him. Both Ravindra and Chapman are fine prospects for New Zealand in the longer format. But in a high-pressure T20 game, the duo has often struggled to race out of the blocks. With a combined strike rate of barely 130, New Zealand haven’t really helped themselves on the field by featuring the two players ahead of Mitchell.
